Navigating a Racially Charged Landscape: An Examination of Racism in Jewell Parker Rhodes’ Black Brother, Black Brother

This article examines the portrayal of racism and its effect on the titular character in Jewell Parker Rhodes' novel Black Brother, Black Brother. The novel offers a poignant exploration of race relations through the lens of twelve-year-old Donte Davis Ellison, who faces the harsh realities of racial prejudice at his predominantly white private school. The analysis draws upon both the literary text and relevant academic research to illuminate the profound impact of racism on Donte's identity and sense of belonging. It delves deep into the novel and brings out more specific examples from the novel to illustrate the impact of racism on Donte's life and experiences, and his attempts to bash through them with the help of family members and the coach. It ascertains that Donte retaliates in a constructive and pragmatic way.
