| Abstract |
The poetry of T. S. Eliot reflects a profound engagement with the literary, philosophical, and spiritual traditions of the past, among which the influence of Dante Alighieri occupies a central position. Eliot regarded Dante as one of the greatest European poets whose works transcended linguistic and temporal boundaries. This paper explores the influence of Dante on Eliot’s poetry, particularly in terms of imagery, symbolism, spiritual vision, fragmentation, and poetic technique. By analyzing poems such as The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, Ash Wednesday, and Four Quartets, the study demonstrates how Eliot adapts Dantean motifs of hell, purgatory, and redemption to portray the spiritual crisis of modern civilization. The research also examines Eliot’s use of intertextuality, mythic structure, and religious symbolism derived from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Through a modernist and post-structuralist perspective, the paper argues that Eliot transforms Dante’s medieval spiritual journey into a representation of modern alienation, fragmentation, and the search for transcendence. Ultimately, the study highlights Dante’s lasting impact on Eliot’s poetic imagination and the evolution of modernist poetry. |
