The Role of Chishti Sufis in the Sociopolitical Landscape of Medieval India

This study explores the influential role of Chishti Sufis in shaping the sociopolitical landscape of medieval India, focusing on their impact on governance, statecraft, and social cohesion during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods. By analyzing primary sources such as hagiographies, court records, and inscriptions, alongside critical secondary literature, the research examines how the Chishti Sufis mediated between rulers and the masses, fostering religious tolerance and political legitimacy. The study underscores the role of Chishti shrines as both spiritual sanctuaries and political centers, contributing to the integration of diverse communities within a cohesive state framework. Furthermore, the Chishti Sufi ideology of justice, compassion, and social welfare influenced the governance models of the period, leaving a lasting imprint on the cultural and political fabric of medieval India.
