The Social Order of the Manusmṛti and Its Contemporary Relevance

The Manusmṛti occupies an important position in the history of ancient Indian social thought. The present study, entitled “The Social Order of the Manusmṛti and Its Contemporary Relevance,” examines Manu’s conception of social organisation and evaluates its significance from the perspective of contemporary society. The study focuses primarily on the Varṇa system, the Āśrama system, the position of women, and the ethical values reflected in Manu’s social thought. The Varṇa system constituted a major foundation of Manu’s social organisation. The Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya, and Śūdra were assigned distinct duties and responsibilities in social life. Alongside this,the four Āśramas Brahmacarya, Gārhasthya, Vānaprastha, and Sannyāsa provided a structured framework for the different stages of individual life, emphasising education, family responsibilities, social duties, self-restraint, and spiritual development. Manu’s views on women reveal both an emphasis on their dignity, welfare, and importance within the family and certain restrictions on their independence, reflecting the social conditions of his time. The study further considers the contemporary relevance of Manu’s social thought. The provisions relating to Varṇa, gender, and social hierarchy cannot be directly applied to modern society, which is based on equality, individual liberty, social justice, and constitutional rights. However, ethical values such as duty, self-restraint, truthfulness, forgiveness, purity, non-violence, and responsibility continue to possess significance in contemporary life. Therefore, Manu’s social system should neither be accepted uncritically nor rejected entirely. A balanced and critical approach is necessary to understand its historical significance, social implications, and continuing relevance. The study concludes that the Manusmṛti remains an important source for understanding the development of ancient Indian social thought, while its provisions must be evaluated in the light of modern humanistic and constitutional values.
