Abstract

Abstract

Beating the Deadline: Exploring the Impact of Academic Procrastination on Academic Achievement among College Students in Sikkim
Abstract
Academic procrastination has emerged as a significant behavioral concern in higher education, often linked to decreased academic performance and psychological distress among students. This study investigates the levels of academic procrastination and its relationship with academic achievement among college students in Sikkim, a North-Eastern state of India. The research also examines whether procrastination differs significantly based on gender and the type of institution (government vs. private colleges). A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from a stratified random sample of 300 undergraduate students drawn from various colleges in Sikkim. Academic procrastination was measured using a standardized Academic Procrastination Scale, while academic achievement was assessed through students’ self-reported Grade Point Averages (GPAs) or percentage scores. For the statistical analysis SPSS was used to calculate independent samples t-tests to compare procrastination levels across gender and institution type, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient to explore the relationship between procrastination and academic achievement. The findings revealed no statistically significant difference in academic procrastination between male and female students or between students from government and private institutions. However, a significantly low negative correlation was found between academic procrastination and academic achievement, indicated that higher levels of procrastination are associated with lower academic performance. These results highlight the need for institutions in Sikkim to address procrastination behaviours through targeted academic counselling, self-regulation training, and time management workshops. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on procrastination by providing region-specific insights and underscores the importance of psychological and behavioral interventions to enhance student success in higher education.

Citizen Participation in the Law -Making Processes of Local Governments: A Study of Selected Local Levels of Karnali Province
Abstract
Citizens in the majority of West European nations have increased their influence on policymaking in recent decades. According to Cain et al. (2006), numerous nations have acquired expertise in participatory budgeting, citizens' advisory committees, and collaborative governance. From a democratic standpoint, citizen participation is seen as an important component of democratic decision-making and democratic citizenship. More specifically, deliberative and participatory democrats contend that citizen participation improves democracy(Michels & Graaf, n.d.). Questions are also being raised about representative democracy. Numerous actors interacting in complex decision-making processes and the waning role of political parties in representation (e.g., declining voter turnout and rising electoral volatility) have sparked debate about the legitimacy of democracy and prompted calls for more ways for citizens to participate (Cain et al., 2006). Theoretically, participatory and deliberative democrats argue over the role of citizen engagement in democracies. We outline the key justifications for citizens' direct political engagement as proposed by theory, though they are by no means comprehensive. According to participatory democratic theory, citizens become disenfranchised from politics when decision-making authority is delegated. They believe that citizen participation is essential to democracy.

ARSENICOSIS – A Geological problem of Bihar
Abstract
In the past few years, a large percentage of the population is suffering from Arsenic poisoning due to Arsenic contamination in ground water in the Ganga plains of Bihar. Apart from skin diseases, it is also inviting serious diseases like mental disability and cancer. According to the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPC), Arsenic has been found in ground water of many districts of Bihar and the increasing incidence of Gall bladder cancer in these districts is being linked to it. Among the four major agro climatic zones in Bihar, high number of As- affected districts are situated in zone- 1 and zone- 2, respectively. The risk of cancer in human organ like skin, bladder, kidney, liver and lungs has been increased in the state with the prevalence of high Arsenic (As) levels, particularly near the north of Ganga River. Moreover, effective policies and regulations are needed based on spatial variation in contamination, socio-economic condition, and demographic characteristics. In this paper we will discuss the causes, effects and diagnosis of Arsenic contamination.

Abstract

Morphological Changes In Karada Dialect Of Kasaragod Under Dravidian Influences
Abstract
Languages and dialects are dynamic and constantly evolving entities shaped by social, cultural, and historical contexts in which they are used. This evolution often results in morphological changes, which refers to the process of changes in the form of structure of words, phrases, or sentences of a language or a dialect over the time due to the behaviour of speakers. Tracing the morphological changes in Karada dialect of Kasaragod, would also mean understanding its demographic distribution, historicity and regional linguistic influences on it. Originally, Karada brahmins belong to the place of Karada, situated in Satara district of Maharashtra, from where they migrated to Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod probably during the early sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries. Thus, Karada brahmins of Kasaragod are essentially multilingual, Since their identity and existence depended on Tulu and Kannada when communicating outside their community, as Tulu was dominant in the working space and Kannada was majorly used in administration and educational governance of Kasaragod. The influence of Malayalam is less, since it became dominant in Kasaragod only after the linguistic re-organization of states. The above influences had not only resulted in morphological changes, but had also elucidated on the acceptance and practice of certain culture of the above Dravidian groups by the Karada brahmins, therefore becoming a part of linguistic and cultural diversity of Kasaragod. Karada also becomes unique through various other sub-dialectical variations to it caused by the significant structural and lexical borrowings from Tulu, Kannada and Malayalam, resulting in morphological changes. In view of the above, this study employs qualitative research methodology and examines the basic morphological changes in Karada dialect caused by the predominant regional Dravidian languages of Kasaragod.

Adapting Education: Digital Textbooks in Indian Education with special focus on North Eastern Region.
Abstract
Abstract
In both primary and secondary classrooms across our country, students of varying abilities and linguistic backgrounds encounter teachers who primarily use textbooks for teaching. While most states provide textbooks for free, distribution challenges in remote areas can cause delays. The pandemic exposed a critical flaw in our educational system which was being unprepared for remote learning. The sudden absence of physical textbooks, traditionally pivotal in knowledge dissemination, disrupted the system. Despite connectivity issues, educational institutions transitioned to online teaching methods. This shift led to the adoption of digital textbooks, a new experience for administrators, educators, and students. This study examines the impact of digital textbooks on students in India's North Eastern states, analysing their implementation and effects on education. It reflects the broader trend of moving from print to digital resources, emphasizing how digital tools adapt to shape learning experiences, especially in resource-constrained regions like the North East.

Adopting Heutagogy in Adult Learning: Case Studies from Higher Education
Abstract
This paper presents a case study-based analysis of the paradigm shift from andragogy to heutagogy in adult learning, especially within higher education settings. Drawing on recent research and theoretical perspectives, this study explores how self-determined learning principles are applied across four institutional case studies. The cases highlight practical implementations, learner outcomes, and instructional design adaptations. This shift emphasizes learner autonomy, capability development, and the integration of digital tools. By comparing these case studies to traditional pedagogical and andragogical approaches, the paper offers evidence supporting the efficacy of heutagogical practices. The findings contribute to understanding how heutagogy can be effectively operationalized in diverse learning environments and suggest recommendations for institutional adoption.

Hunting Tradition of the Santals
Abstract
Among India’s Scheduled Tribes, the Santhals are the third most populous. They primarily reside in the states of Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Assam, but a significant number also live in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Despite this wide geographical spread, their culture and traditions remain remarkably consistent. Among their many cultural practices, hunting stands out as a significant tradition.
Hunting is a traditional culture of Santals. It's a men's game. They worship and hunt the forests once a year. It is also called the marriage of forests. Worshiping the gods of forests and mountains, they feel comfortable roaming only after hunting in the forests.
First of all, they fix the day of hunting and tie the Gira to invite peoples. They tie the Gira of Khajoor or Kita branches. People open or pluck each leaf of the Khajoor or Kita Gira every day from the day of tying to the appointed day. On the day when the leaves end, people worship the forests and hunt. Hunting does not mean killing wild creatures. They drive away wild animals from their surroundings so as to save the crop from wild animals.
In the Santal Society, hunters are respected. After returning from hunting, the hunters’ feet are washed with respect. After that, they enter the house and are given food. Married men re-wear the wife's bracelet opened before going to the hunt. The meat is offered to the gods and ancestors, after which all the people of the family eat.

Abstract

This study examines the social and economic impacts of the landslide, highlighting the vulnerability of the local population to natural disasters. The landslide, which occurred on November 27, 2022, was triggered by heavy rainfall and has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure, including roads and agricultural land. The study reveals that the landslide has had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of the villagers, who are primarily dependent on agriculture and dairy farming. The blockage of the only road in the area has disrupted the supply chain, leading to losses for farmers and dairy producers. The study also highlights the social impacts of the landslide, including displacement, trauma, and stress among the local population. The villagers have been forced to seek shelter elsewhere, and many are struggling to access basic necessities like food, water, and healthcare. The study emphasizes the need for sustainable infrastructure development and disaster risk reduction measures to mitigate the impact of future disasters. It also highlights the importance of providing support to the affected community, including financial assistance, technical support, and infrastructure development. The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the impacts of landslides on local communities and inform policy decisions aimed at reducing the risk of such disasters. The study's recommendations will be useful for policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers working in the field of disaster risk reduction and management. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the social and economic impacts of the Gaguney landslide and highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to disaster risk reduction and management. By understanding the impacts of landslides on local communities, we can develop more effective strategies to mitigate the effects of future disasters and promote sustainable development in the region. The study's findings will be useful for developing policies and programs aimed at reducing the vulnerability of local communities to natural disasters and promoting sustainable development in the region.

From Rote Learning to Creative Expression: NEP 2020 and the Future of Art Education
Abstract
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions a radical shift in India’s educational landscape by moving away from rote memorization toward holistic, creative, and experiential learning. Art education is central to this transformation, as it fosters creativity, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and emotional intelligence. This paper examines the role of art education in fulfilling NEP 2020’s vision, focusing on how it can transform classrooms into spaces of innovation, inclusivity, and expression. Through a review of literature, the study highlights the pedagogical significance of integrating art into mainstream education, the challenges in implementation, and possible strategies to overcome them. It concludes that art education, if systematically implemented, can nurture 21st-century competencies and empower learners to balance knowledge, skills, and values in alignment with India’s cultural heritage and global demands.

Declining Population Growth Rate in Sikkim
Abstract
Sikkim has witnessed a consistent decline in population growth since 1991, continuing in 2011 Census. This study try to explore the underlying causes and implications of this trend by examining key demographic and socio-economic factors, including decadal growth rates, literacy levels, healthcare infrastructure, and workforce participation. The population growth rate fell from 50.77% in 1981 to 28.47% in 1991, 33.06% in 2001, and 12.89% in 2011, indicating a clear downward trajectory. Conversely, literacy improved significantly from 41.59% in 1981 to 82.2% in 2011. These shifts suggest that higher literacy, improved medical infrastructure, and greater participation of women in the workforce have contributed to the decline in population growth. To address this issue, the study recommends targeted policies such as incentives for larger families, affordable quality healthcare access, and support systems for working women. The findings hold crucial policy relevance, emphasizing the complex interrelationship between education, health, gender dynamics, and population growth in Sikkim.
